Don't drink water while working out?!?

    Hello,
I've heard from different people that you should not drink water during a workout. This is because the blood in your body should be concentrated in the muscles to maximize energy and muscle strength, while if you drink water during a workout some of your blood (and therefore energy) is being used by your digestive system to digest water. Is this right?
Also, similar to this, I have also heard not to workout until atleast 1 hr to 1.5 hrs have passed, because you stomach is digesting your food still.
    Thanks for all the help,
    Ryan

Water is a basic building block of energy. Dehydration will most certainly lead to exhaustion much earlier in your workout. That said; if you are adequately hydrated throughout the day (Drinking 10 - 12 glasses of water though out the day) you very well could workout, drink no water thought your workout, and stay relatively hydrated. But I think the resources spent on H2O digestion are so minimal that they would not adversely affect your workout in drastic way.

The only thing to avoid is being overly bloated on water or food during your workout.

Water, not food, is good during the workout if consumed as needed. Water's the body's natural response to work. I've always drank whatever was needed, with no problems. The idea of holding back on water consumption when you're body's telling you to drink is ludicrous; just don't drink so much that you're bloated.

I read in a reliable weight trainign magazine, that powerade is preferred, then gatorade, then water. I thought it was interesting.

Powerade and Gatorade replace essential electrolytes that your body loses during energy expenditure and sweating. Electrolytes are an essential part of hydration. the "ades" also have a small amount of sodium in them; the sodium serves to keep you just a little bit thirsty, it's a reminder to drink.

I usually drink a few sips from the fountain or bottle after each different type of workout. It works out well for me and lets me get ready for my next exercise. IMO, you should do what you feel is right, like the others have said, don't drink till you are bloated. Everyone knows then they need water, go with your gut.

your body will not digest the water while you're working out, nor will it digest food, your body is in the sympathetic nervous system mode, which halts or slows digestion while speeding up heart rate, constricting blood vessels, and raising blood pressure.. so no, no energy is used to digest water while working out..

Thanks for your responses, I've started drinking water again during workouts and don't see any decrease in weight lifting energy.
