Gaining Weight and Cardio.

Hey guys, i recently decided to stick with putting on weight ( the good kind). I have started heavy lifting full body workouts three days a week, often later in the day i like to do a little jog ( not too far, bout 2 miles) with focusing mainly on sprints, stairs and running up hills. Is this hurting my attempts to gain weight, or is this helping me keep lean but not lowering my muscle growth?

the biggest factor which will help keep you lean is your diet. eat healthy.

as far as the "cardio" hurting your attempts to gain weight, it depends on the following:
-if you eat enough so that you can have a surplus even with the extra exercise
-the intensity and duration of your running
-when you do your running

ah ok. I eat at least 8 dif meals throughout the day, string cheese, almonds, yogurt, eggs, oatmeal, tuna. As for the cardio, i mainly am focusing on high intensity and not so long, around 25 to 35 min. That ok?

although that is an important factor, there is more than that.
lets say he did a full body workout on monday.
on teusday, he wants to do some high intensity sprinting, which will activate type II fast twitch muscle fibers, the same used during weight training.
his muscles are still recovering from monday's FBW.
performing HIIT on teusday can cripple his recovery and further fatigue or tear his muscles.
this can lead to a much less productive full body workout on wednesday due to the lost recovery.

this is why the type, volume, duration and intensity of his running must be carefully inspected and tailored towards his routine.

My friend, PB. Your missing the point on calories, bud. Remember what is necessary for tissue growth, Tissue loss and Recovery: Calorie consumption amount and the circumference of nutrients in these calories, and of course, rest. And, even if appropriate rest is given for recovery after training, if caloric consumption (and Nutrients) are not on par and/or adjoined correctly (with personal goals in mind) the recovery can be compromised.

In addition, you are correct in pressing spacing of training and trying to ensure recovery has occurred between workouts (we have to allow time for the body to rebuild itself); however, we must couple this WITH the diet to assist this recovery or rebuilding Process because: DIET IS KING.

I just want to clear that small issue up, PB. While I agree there are other "Things" to look at like (scheduling workouts and recovery day spacing, intensity levels, and so on and so forth), I believe Diet is the MAJOR player and everything "encircles" it or goes back to it in indirect and direct ways. Calories are a MAJOR player in recovery,-------as is your point on recovering from one workout to te next......great point on that. I am just saying the circumference of the diet must be adjoined to the overall program of the person involved. Im not necessarily disagreeing with you.

You know how I am about the diet......geesh.......Im done........being a loud old man.....

i was simply stating that there is more to the equation than just the diet.

as you said, diet IS king! perhaps i didnt emphasize it, but i agree.
yet,
even given the surplus and a spotless diet, if spacing between workouts is bad, recovery will be submaximal.

I agree with PB here, the OP sounds like he knows what he's doing with calorie intake as he said he has decided to continue gaining lean mass.

Therefore the question of the jog is the most important one. IMO the exercise described sounds fine, i'd hold off from pushing the sprinting too hard though
