Lightbulb Good Mornings are they good for the back?

Are Good Mornings bad for our backs?

I started doing Good Mornings this month, I do them once on Sunday for my leg workout, today I find my self very sore in my lower back. It's not a pain in my spine but in the lower muscles. I'm wanting to make sure that I am not doing any exercises that will give me back pain, so is this pain due to the fact that those muscles have never been worked and this is DOM or am I doing something wrong when I do the exercise, and only my glutes and hamstrings should be sore?

Done correctly good mornings are safe and will work your spinal erectors (lower back) as well as your glutes and hams. You have to keep your back slightly arched and bend only from your hips while doing them. You should definately experience DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) in your lower back if you have not done them before. You might also try stiff legged deadlifts and hyperextensions. I find those much easier to do correctly.

Thanks Dswithers

This morning my lower back feels a little sore but not as bad as yesterday. I figured it must have been because I had not worked those spinal erectors before, they are waking up.
I will have to look up hyperextentions since I don't know what they are.

Goodmornings are essential for strengthening the entire rear chain. You won't be able to build a strong squat without building a strong good morning first. Your form is extremely important though.

Here is a graphic illustration from ExRx.com of proper form.

Thank's Jpfitness

This site will be a great addition to my knowledge base.

Just a note it was www.ExRx.net and not .com for anyone that wishes to check it out.

My lower back is still sore and I did the exercise on Sunday.
I will continue with this exercise and strenghten my lower back.
