Help with deadlift form

I went to the gym today for first time with my friend, he works out there all the time. Together we did back so we went to deadlifts.

I keep my back straight and my knees barley bent and reach down to grab the bar like I was to touch me toes and I grip it properly, than I pull it up to about waist and lock out my hips and bring my shoulders together and then put it back down. I have soreness in my lower back is this normal? feels more of my spine a bit any tips?

during a conventional deadlift your knees will be more than barely bent. Check out the technique article sticky, specially mastering the deadlift.

Yeah the "normal" deadlift you will bend your knees a lot. Sounds like you were doing a stiff legged deadlift. Just be really careful because a year or so ago, I really hurt my back lifting to much on the deadlift after a long break.

Epididymis, if your friend is an established gym user, you are not at the same level so start light and get your form right (you sound like you were trying to do a straight-leg/straight-back deadlift). You will see a few users here have posted form check videos. As Karky suggested, check the techniques sticky for form.
