need advice - starting a workout

Hey everyone, I registered today after looking around this site for a few days. I am looking to start a workout this summer for about 4 months to help me build a little bit of muscle (not like a bodybuilder or anything, just some to make me look less scrawny for the ladies :P) and lose some belly fat. I have already ready the intro to training posts but got really confused so I'm hoping you fitness gurus can help me. And yes, I am a noob at this so please bear with me if I sound stupid, but please feel free to offer criticism.

Here's a little about me:

I am a male, 18 years old, 5'7", about 142 pounds. I have about 4 lbs (maybe, not too sure) on my belly and some breast fat lol. My face is also a little rounded which I'm hoping this workout can take care of (mainly i'd like to define my jawline). I'm not very muscular, but not totally skin n bones either.

My goals: build about 10-15 lbs of muscle this summer, evenly over the body. lose the minor chest fat.

Over the summer I live with my parents and they do not want me going to a gym b/c they think I'm too young (theyre stubborn ass people). So, I have to resort to buying a few pieces of equipment (maybe 2 10-15lb dumbbells or something and a cardio machine) to work out. I need some suggestions for an overall training regimen, such as diet, routine, etc.

I read somewhere that less weight and more reps is important, so this is why I'm going with light weights, at least for now.

Do my goals seem impossible? How can I improve them, and what do I need to do as far as the actual exercise?

Thanks!

search for "full body workout" on this site. You will find the same advice has been given hundreds of times.

18 years old and you are not allowed to go to a gym? :s.. you really need a gym, as BW exercises at home can be limited unless you have a barbell, a bench, a squat rack and some dumbells

I would highly reccommend going to the gym.

Do they have a better reason for not letting you go?

Where I live people are allowed to go at 14

Yup go to the gym.
Come on, you go out and lie to your folks where you're going when you're going to buy drink or hang with the lady, right?? :-)

So, it's just one more fabrication. "Bye Mom and Dad, going bowling with boys for a couple hours." All set, you're in the gym!

Hey bump. I think if you cant go to the gym, try some home work outs, no you dont need all these machines and stuff (although having a tredmill and a couple of dumbells are a BIG help) you can do other things to gain muscle AND loose weight.

For example, every night, before going to sleep, do about 100 push-ups and as many crunches as you can. The push-ups help with the muscle and the crunches can really help with loosing a little fat around your stomach area. I used to be only able to do 50 crunches nonstop but as i continued my routine im not up to 600. So, Good Luck with everything .

Hey thanks for the replies guys. I will try to get into a gym one way or another. Any recommendations for diet? I really have no idea. I'm thinking of buyin that book "Scrawny to Brawny" by John Berardi, but any of your tips are greatly appreciated.

They think it will stunt my growth, and they are even more concerned since I am 5'7" and apparently "have some inches left in me." I tried to explain to them it doesnt do anything but they dont believe me. =\

I'm 14, nearly 15, about 6ft, and have grown about 3 inches since last July. I've lifted weights properly for about a year now, but before that I was still doing some weight work. If anybody would like to tell me that I've stunted my growth, please do so, because I can't see any evidence behind that whatsoever. It also really hacks me off, because kids in my school year (9th grade/year 10) especially the smaller guys, won't hit the weights. This results in having teams which could be so much stronger, but because of some myth, are just average.

Your 18, your an adult. Yes, you will probably grow a few more inches, but weight training will do nothing but help that. Tell your parents that you want a gym membership, or just go behind their backs then laugh at them in a year when your 5ft 10, 160lbs and getting more attention from the opposite sex than both of them ever have, put together
