New to this/Bench pressing (2 Questions)

Hi, I've just recently started working out, so forgive me for seeming so naive on the subject. But I was curious what some of these terms meant:

1.) # Sets of # Reps

I see that on a few sites, and posts and such, and I know what it is, but I don't think I actually KNOW what it is. That's basically how many of what excercise you do in X ammount of time? or what..

2.) 1-RM

No idea what that is... at all.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, on an unrelated thread topic, I have a "Marcy MWM 1600 Powerhouse Home Gym" With a PowerBar that reads "Light" "Medium" and "Heavy"

When I bench press, I put 95 lbs worth of weight on, which is the highest amount for the "Light" setting (10 out of 10 weights), It's... harder than if I were to put it on 165 lbs (5 out of 10) on the setting for "Heavy"

Anyone know what's goin on with that? Obviously somethings not right right the machine if I'm lifting 165 easier than 90... And there's 2 reasons why I would like tio know how to fix that, one being, I can't even tell how much I can bench, or even if what I'm benching is what it says I'm benching.

reps you must do consecutivley ... like benchpressing 10 times in a row

sets are the amount of times you benchpress that bar 10 times in a row.

so if i say do 3 sets of 10 reps ...
then you will do 10 in a row ...
rest
do another 10
rest
do last 10 reps.
i think that was ur question to the first part ...
i dont know the answer to your homegym tho .. sorry

in other words: the amount of weight you can lift for one 'repetition'. often used as a 'standard' to easily compare how strong someone is vs another person.
