Newbie has some questions

I'm 32 yrs old about 5'10" 200lbs

I run on the street outside for about 3-5 miles per day.

Starting to catch up on my legs.

My doctor said it would be good if I started lifting weights.

I would like to develop some sort of program where I use the treadmill for some time per day (easier on my legs) and could also lift some weights.

I want to buy the weight equipment for my home.

I would like to build some muscles in my upper body and lose some fat around my gut.

My legs are already in decent shape from running (they're actually pretty muscular)

My question is what kind of set up should I be looking at?

Free weights or some sort of lifting machine.

My only concern with free weights is dropping it on myself some day (lol).

Where should I start?

Thanks for the help!

A power rack and an adjustable barbell and dumbell set is all you need to work out at home in complete safety. You probably want to alternate days of running and weight lifting for best results (run M W F, lift T T S).
