Newbie, wanting to start using weights.

Hi there,

I want to start using dumbells along with my exercise ball to tone up; especially my stomach, thighs, and upper arms.

I've been looking around for a starting set of dumbells but I can't find anywhere what sort of weight I should be looking for.

I was thinking perhaps one of these?
One
Two
Three

I am 5'5 and my weight fluctuates between 105lbs and 125lbs (big difference I know), and I am relatively unfit, if that makes a difference.

Any input would be really really appreciated thank you. I can't afford anything over £20 because I'm a poor little student haha, so I know that limits the quality/variety.

Definitely not the cute little colored set - you need more than that, even if you are small and unfit.

You might could try some resistance bands (some with a decent amt of resistance). They are cheap and versatile, allowing for several exercises.

Yea... I thought the coloured ones would be a bad choice, but they're the cheapest option... not a good deciding factor I know. Hmm

What sort of weight should I be aiming for roughly to use alongside an exercise ball?

I also recommend resistance bands because you can use them without the ball for squats and such.

Hey there. There's nothing wrong with a little color But you def need bigger weights, maybe you can start with some 8's, 10's and 15's. You'd be surprised how strong you legs may be. Especially for squats and lunges/deadlifts. If they get too easy you can use them for your arm routine

Thanks guys. I'd like to get some resistance bands too at some point but they specifically need to be weights for the exercises I plan on doing (They're illustrated in a fitness book I bought recently - I'd scan it in but my scanner is useless and only scans half the page of everything.... blegh), so I'd like to get those first.

And thank you Moonbeam for the weight specs. Is there a 'rep' system on these boards? I haven't checked yet - hmm. If there is, give me a sec and I'll +rep you
