Push-ups

Okay so I am just curious as to the various types of push ups out there...I know I could go google push up or whatever but I am looking for people here who have experience with all of them to tell me which are best.

I am looking to get the most out of myself with regular hand shoulder width apart pushups because I have an interim physical test for the police academy coming up and I want to just blow away everyone else in this field just because...I like doing push ups lol.

At the moment I can do around 50 pushups straight up...I'm looking to be able to do at least 100. What exercises would help me do push ups?

I appreciate all the help in advance, thanks.

wide stance pushups
diamond pushups

pretty much it. the wider you go, the more you work the pecs, the narrower you go, the more it works the triceps. Just like bench press grip widths.

any compound chest exercise, like bench press, will work the muscles used for pushups.

Don't neglect the opposing muscles. You should do as many sets of bent row or pullups as pushups, or eventually you will suffer injuries due to the imbalance between your pulling and pushing muscles.

And while you are at it, don't neglect your lower body either (legs:squats, lunges, stepups; and posterior chain:deadlift, clean)!

some may not agree, but I like to do my push-ups on 3 chairs(1 for each hand+1 for feet) that way I involve more of my chest...seems to work good for those days you can't get to the gym.Only really works for wide stance and shoulder width.

Hi, im 17 years old and i weight 140-145 lbs. I used to do 3x35 pushups like a month ago, but i switched it to doing 10x25. from 1pm to 10pm, when the clock is exactly at an hour, i do 25 pushups (but i focus more on form). i was wondering if this was better than doing 3x35 (which i did with 3-5 mins of rest between)?

also, i read somewhere that a pushup is roughly 60% of your body mass, and 60% of my body mass is ~88 lbs. I CANT BENCH 88 LBS. why is that? is it odd to be able to do a lot of pushups but unable to do the same amount of force on a bench press? my friend who can only do 30 pushups can bench 120 lbs easily. what can i do to catch up?

I don't know, but I wouldn't worry much about that. Think of what dswithers said a couple posts up. If you concentrate on just improving your bench and pushups, what about dumbbell chest presses, cables, dips, etc? Let alone, what about your back, shoulders, legs? If you work all your muscles properly, they will grow together and work together...

no, i do other stuff. i do 3x6 30lbs dumbbells. and i do 5x75 situps a day, i was just kinda worried cuz i can only bench 80 lbs and thats pathetic for someone my age and size, considering that im not that weak otherwise, so i just wanna know what to do so i can do a normal bench press.

You need to bench press to build up your bench press, man. Pushups are working more of your fiber II type muscle (more for endurance), so doing 50 straight pushups isn't really going to make you much stronger or bigger at all. On the other hand, using exercises at an intense weight in a 4-12 rep range will get you stronger. I suggest that you work with some weights to build up that strength rather than all that endurance work that you are doing.

mhm. i see what you mean. i dont really have access to a bench press, does doing 10-12 reps pushups with ~30 lbs on your back count as intense weight?

That would be a much better solution than just straight out pushups. Dips and other bodyweight exercises are great as well.
