I usually lift in my running shoes and I haven't had any problems yet. Today I lifted in my wrestling shoes though, I don't know if that's good for my feet or not.

i usually buy cross trainers for lifting and cardio, since i'm not running any marathons, a hybrid is good enough.

a lot of hardcore lifters like converse 'chucks' for deadlifts and squats. they are very flat footed, unlike tennis shoes which often are thicker in the heel.

i've lifted in my airwalks a few times doing squats and kinda liked it, but they suck for running, period.

I lift in my running shoes (Asics gel) and actually prefer them.
They are actually the first shoe that is completely comfortable no matter what I am doing.

I've seen people at the gym this summer in sandals, it drive me insane! You could roll your ankle and damage it severely. I just workout in cross-trainers. I think anything with decent support would be alright.
