Shoulder pops on pull-ups

Whenever I do pull-ups (palms facing away) my right shoulder kinda pops. It does this no matter how I do them (proper and improper form). It doesn't really hurt, just feels weird. Has anybody else experienced anything else like that? Should I ignore it if it doesn't cause any pain, or am I risking a shoulder dislocation?

are your shoulderblades retracted during the entire movement, or free to move? also, how wide grip do you use? I know of people who dont use wide grip because it makes their shoulder pop. shoulder width grip is probobly better anyway, more ROM.

Of course, you should consult a doctor. However, I have several joints, including my right shoulder, that I can pop on command for as many times in a row as I want. I don't think you have reason to fear a dislocation.

You may be right but it might be indirectly increasing his risk of a dislocation in the future, so yeah if your concerned enough go see a doc of physio. I can pop my shoulder too but dont do it anymore either should you! You dont want to make your joint lax and vunerable.

I have to agree. If the popping were occasional, and not associated with pain I would say leave it be. But because it's occurring with every pull, it could never hurt to have it looked at.

The reason your feeling it "no matter how [you] do them" is because you're hands are locked in place, thus locking your shoulder complex in place. Same problem with flat bench. People with shoulder problems tend to find more comfort in DB bench because they can change the rotation of their hands to open or close the joint.

When you perform chin-ups or neutral grip pullups does the pain disappear?

I crack all the joints that I can whenever possible. It feels great, and there is no empirical evidence that it is in any way detrimental. Joints will not become "lax" or "vulnerable" (vulnerable to what?).

It doesn't pop when I do chin ups (palms facing me), but it does pop when I do side raises.

There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that cracking joints makes them weaker but I think you're right in that nothing has ever been proven.

I used to have exactly the same problem, my left shoulder used to click when doing chins. It never hurt but was very distracting. I have no idea why but it went away as I got stronger

Try some light rotator cuff work prior to the pullups and see if that helps.

Same happened to me. I know that when I do wide-grip pulldowns my shoulders pop as well. Which is why I do pullups

Umm im not talking about "cracking" like you do with your fingers, but actuall popping where the head of the humerous is actually displaced. Im assuming this is what the poster meant anyway..
