That sore feeling

I got a friend to start me working out in the weight room. Well after my first day in there which was a long time ago I felt incredibly fatigued. When I lift my arms I felt incredibly sore and my friend told me that's when your muscle tears and it gets bigger when it heals up. Is it true in order to get bigger muscles first you have to have them tear?

"Your muscles don't grow when they are being worked, they grow when they are resting. You need to work your muscles, then give them time to recover, and then work them again, then recover, etc. Each time they get worked, and then recover they get stronger and bigger.
*Each time you work them, and then work them again before they had time to recover, they get weaker and stay the same, and sometimes even get smaller."

Try doing splits, it will be more effective.

Also, if you're weight training and trying to loose weight (as in fat) you'll need to up the calories to feed that muscle. Muscle burns fat. Along with you're lifting, cardio, and, the most important thing, a good high protein blanced fat + carb diet you'll loose be in shape in no time.

The sorness is called delayed onset muscle soreness. Very common. The intensity you feel is from just starting to work out. It will lessen over time.

Remember, you're just starting, try not to overdo it.

Keep it light, develop good form, then increase weight. If a muscle group feels very sore, rest it. If you have a mild discomfort, it's probably ok to work it.

I have a question. How sore should you get on an optimal day at the gym?
