Too Much? Not enough? Lifting/cardio

Hi i am tryin to get back in to good shape kinda built but no body builder. i am about 5'11 240 currently i have lost about 25 pounds in the last few months workin out 3-4 days a week but i have upped that to 6 days generally i do Chest/back/tri's about 30-50 min mon wed and Leg/Bi's/abs tue thur each day with 40 min of cardio 20 tread 20 eliptical. Sat i do a full body workout with cardio and sunday just cardio. I mix it up between free weights and machines trying to stay on the heavier side less reps. I really only take a multivitiman and try to watch what i eat. Is this too much / to little? I was thinkin of starting to take a protein shake after my workouts will that help? i want to lose weight too so i don't wana pack on anymore. Any suggestions out there what i should change or add in? Thanks for your time.

Protein shakes after a workout will help with the delivery of protein to your muscles when they need protein. Since you are trying to lose weight, just make sure the shake is low in calories and carbs. As long as your total calorie intake is low enough to run at a deficit, you should continue to lose weight. The lifting and the protein should help to prevent as much muscle loss as possible.

Actually, I'm going to call shinanigans on evan's post. Not out of cruelty, mind you, but his logic is just a little off. Immediately post workout, you need protein, but you also NEED carbs. Post workout is not the time to cut carbs. Your body needs simple carbs and protein, because after a workout, it's running low on both. It needs the carbs to bounce back from it's depleted state. This will help ensure you rebuild the muscle that you just tore up.

But again, you still need to be in a caloric deficit in order to lose weight. So, WHEN (not if) you start ingesting your post-workout shakes, make sure those calories are being compensated for somewhere else in your diet.

Yeah, I forgot about post workout carbs. I was thinking about maintaining a low calorie/carb/fat diet to cut body fat. But yes, the bulk of carb intake should be right after a workout.

Good call on the shinanigans.
