Don't let fear hold you back!

Ok… This blog goes out to all the people out there that may feel embarrassed, intimidated, or afraid to work out at a gym because they are "not in shape".

First off you have to remember every one has to start somewhere and NOBODY IS PERFECT! Most people that work out started somewhere just like you and they also felt the same way at first. Don't let your mind play tricks on you or let you temporary insecurities keep you from ABSOLUTE WELLNESS!

I will tell you my story as an example…

When I made the decision to change my life and achieve absolute wellness I was unsure at first on how to reach my fitness goals. I didn't have the room or money to get my own weights or fitness equipment at home. I had the desire to work out at a gym, yet didn't have the extra money for an initiation fee. Out of the blue my wife picked up a part time job at the YMCA. (Law of Attraction) and we were given a free membership. I also wanted to join a gym to watch other people workout so I could get ideas and mimic the way other people exercised.

Now back in the day I did do some Karate and weight lifting (Jr. High and High school) so I had a basic understanding that to exercise and to get results you had to be uncomfortable during the process. That is where the saying "No pain, no gain" comes from. In my case I was embarrassed to work out because of how weak I was. The mental part of wondering if the person next to you is internally laughing at you because you are Over weight or To skinny or To weak, will only hold you back. Fear can be your worse enemy.

Growing up I was always a skinny guy with chicken legs but I had a never ending source of endurance. When I hit my 30's most of my endurance was gone. I would look in the mirror and I didn't like how my body looked. I wasn't overly fat and the cloths I wore hid my "manly" love handles and gut. My calves shoulders and legs were still skinny but my Mid-section was getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

Now what really hit me was when I worked out with my friend's wife. I was shocked. She was much stronger then I was. I have to be totally honest. I was embarrassed because she was lifting more then I was. a I was pushing with everything I had to get 10 reps of 10 pound dumbbells doing a shoulder press! Another thing that struck me was that she was keeping a workout log. Why would you take a notebook or pencil into a gym???

At this point I knew I had to learn more. I wanted to work out "Smarter" and really understand fitness as a science. I went to the local library and check out a bunch of books. Some of them good, some of them not so good. But one thing I found in common was Four basic things.

1. Exercise alone will not get you results beside giving you a longer life span (that is a great thing but I wanted to look good too)

2.Diet alone will not get you results besides giving your body a longer life span (again that is good but I wanted to look good too)

3. Good quality supplements (because modern food doesn't have the nutrients we need)

4. To be successful you have to journal your results so you can track yourself and challenge your body for future workouts.

The GOLDEN RULE or SECRET to achieving ABSOLUTE WELLNESS was to do all four. Challenging exercise, proper diet supplementation, and log my results!

I started small and worked my way up. One day at a time, one week at a time, one month at a time! I was constantly feeding my mind with information and knowledge. And I put that knowledge to the test and logged it. And guess what? IT WORKED!

Soon you learn that everyone else in the gym is working for the same thing in some way or another. Your self esteem and self image start to gain momentum! You now look in the mirror and notice that your body is changing from what it was only a few months ago to what your vision in the near future.

Now as I work out I see new people and I know what they are going through and I know because I've been there. Maybe someone wants to loose weight and size. Maybe they want to gain weight and size, or maybe they want to get their body fit like it was when they were younger so they can live a long life. What ever the case, I see all those types of people in the gym everyday. Now I give them a smile or just say something nice. I know it helped me back when I started.

The last thing I would like say is this… If you really want it bad enough, you will work through the embarrassing times and just go for it. THE MIND IS THE STONGEST MUSCLE! Always remember that. You can find a way to make it work!

Conceive it, believe it, and you will achieve it!

Good post, I agree...If you start out weak and uneducated, the most empowering thing and the thing that will give you the most momentum is knowledge.

Thank you.

Oh and I love your quote. I will have to check that book out "Education of a Powerlifter". It looks good just by the quote alone. :-)

Nice post, I see people that are intimidated everyday coming into the gym.

as gym members we need to make people that are new to the gym feel welcome a "hi" is all it takes to make someone feel like they belong

That book is a good book.

Yeah, and if people at your gym do make comments, go elsewhere. It's not needed.
