Heart Rate

Hi - Just turned 50 and was wondering about the heart rate formula. I think it is 220 less your age (50) = 170. If I work out at 80% of my heart rate, then is that 136? Isn't that pretty low? I usually work out at 160 and sprint up to 177. If I don't "push" myself, then I feel my walk is a waste of time.

Any comments?
Thanks

220-age, yup. that's a general guide line. it sounds like you're in better shape then most, so some alterations could be made. since sprinting (probably 100% hr) is 177, and you're theoretical max is 170 that's not that big of a difference. i'd reccomend not going over 177 though.

I'm 62, so my mhr is 158. I routinely go higher than that on my elliptical, so I wouldn't worry about yours. If you are in good shape, and you don't feel any negative effects from it, just keep keepin' on.

The formula for predicted max heart rate is 220-age. The ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) recommends an intensity of 64%/70% up to 94% of maximum heart rate. If your maximum heart rate is predicted at 170 bpm then your intensity range would be 109/119 up to 160. Even though you are exceeding these limits when you are working out, I wouldnt worry about it unless you have chest pains or any other problems at those heart rate intensities. The ranges of heart rate intensities are just recommendations for the general public.
