To get fit enough to compete at a decent level in soccer - the first thing you should do is raise your base fitness up - this means lots of running and working hard.

When you've hit a good level of fitness - you need to then become match fit

There are lots of theories on how to become Match fit, HIIT is one, however the only proven one is playing matches.

No matter how much running you do - you can never replicate the game fitness - including the jumping for headers, getting up quickly after being challenged/making a tackle etc.

But to become match fit, you need to be physically fit first.

Here's what you can do

Focus on leg, abs and conditioning. You don't need to work on your upperbody alot (though you may). The two sports don't involve alot of upper body strength so don't bother working on your upper body alot.

You can find specific exercises on the internet along with cardio exercises, you need both.

Are you suggesting that specificity is the only variable one should concern him/herself with when it comes to program design?

It's not the ONLY variable, but it's important. It wouldn't make much sense for a football kicker to go off practicing moves that a linebacker would do.

I was not suggesting this at all. I am suggesting that your original post was inaccurate however. Total body training, that includes sports specific movements is the path an athlete should take. Not simply, sports specific movements.

Creating imbalances in your physiological makeup by focusing on certain muscle groups and paying little attention to others is a great way to have athletes injure themselves.
